Mexican forward Antonio Pedroza has revealed that he almost signed for Tottenham Hotspur a decade and a half ago but Harry Redknapp called off the deal at the very last moment.
Pedroza was thought off quite highly as a youngster but the forward’s career failed to deliver what it promised. The 33-year-old was a bit of a journeyman, having had various spells in Europe and South America before hanging up his boots a couple of years ago.
He even had a short spell in English football with Crystal Palace, making five appearances for the Eagles during the 2011-12 season.
Pedroza has now revealed that prior to his switch to Selhurst Park, he almost completed a transfer to Spurs as a youngster.
Harry Redknapp cancelled Pedroza’s Tottenham medical
He suggested that while Tottenham called off the move, citing an issue with the medical, it was Redknapp who decided to scupper the transfer as the then-Spurs manager did not know who he was.
Pedroza told The Athletic: “We signed a deal with Tottenham but that broke down because I didn’t pass a medical. They told me I had something wrong with my hip but at the end of the day. I think the real problem was that the owner of the team, the president, the big boss didn’t tell the manager, Harry Redknapp.
“When I got there with my agent, he was like ‘Who is this guy? I don’t know him, so I’m not going to sign him. My agent explained the situation but Redknapp said, ‘I don’t give a ____, he’s not signing with me.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Pedroza was only joining Tottenham’s academy rather than as a first-team player, it is crazy to think that the club would have organised the transfer without the approval of their manager.
