Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on a few big-name signings over the years, but failing to snap up Eden Hazard could well be the biggest of them all. Now, Harry Redknapp has explained just how desperately he wanted the Belgian, and why it never happened.
Obviously, it can be very hard to tell who will become a future superstar. Tottenham have got that call very right in the past, signing the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric before seeing them develop into genuine world-class talents.
In the past, Spurs have missed out on huge names like Jack Grealish, Willian, and more recently, Luis Diaz. But one name haunts the North London side more than most, and it’s probably due to the fact he ended up shining at Chelsea instead.
Eden Hazard, despite some injury issues, is rightly regarded as one of the most talented wingers to arrive in the Premier League. But, he could have been excelling at Tottenham instead of winning trophies with their London rivals.
Harry Redknapp really wanted Eden Hazard at Spurs
Harry Redknapp discussed the matter with ESPN, after being asked who the best player he missed out on signing was.
He said: “Probably Eden Hazard. I should’ve got him. I met him, wanted to sign him but Tottenham wouldn’t pay the money at the time. He was a lot cheaper and he was very young at the time when I tried to get him.
“At Tottenham, we had a chance, we were right there, second in the league at the time and he could’ve pushed us on to being close to winning the league that year.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would have been a lot of fun to see Eden Hazard in that Spurs team under Redknapp. These things happen, I guess, but we do seem to miss out on top talent quite often just by not being willing to get the deal across the line, and then we regret it years later.
